i don't understand how the Op knows for a fact that the cat was euthanized rather than adopted out. Was that actually confirmed?

OMG. That is unforgivable. She had no right to do that. I'm so sorry. Your mother doesn't seem totally innocent either to not even tell you and let you go looking for the cat. I don't know how you can trust them anymore. A counselor could help you sort this out.
