I don't text. I am 44.
You literally don't know how to text, or you won't pay for it?
I won't pay for it, and I don't like it, so I don't pay for it. It's kind of a circular thing. Not sure which is the more determining factor. But I both a) don't like texts and b) don't want to pay for texts.
How long does it take you to respond to emails, and do you have a smartphone so you can read emails when you are out of the house?

The message will show as "read" if the person has it set to show on their locked home screen. Example, your message pops up on my screen, I push my button to check the time on my phone, which will show your message and the other notifications on my screen, but I don't actually look at it or read it. It's going to show that I read it at 10:25 AM, but really I just checked the time or swiped to unlock my phone to do something else.

I don't think that "live in 2017" = "have your phone on and with you at all times", although I know that there are people who do think this (mostly middle-schoolers).
With you at all times? No, of course not. On? I wasn't aware that there was a good reason to turn a phone off.
