Dog-allergic folks should know the pet policies of the places they frequent. Home Depot allows dogs. If you are thatallergic to dogs, don't go to Home Depot!

Is that any different than many children in restaurants?

Bulldog/Home Depot poster here: The only difference is behavior, IMO. I have yet to see a dog in any store like Home Depot behave worse than many kids behave in public.

I'm not saying people shouldn't clean up after their dogs. I was responding to the fact that people are upset the dog has step foot on their property and pooped to begin with....even if the owner cleans up after them. If your child needed to poop on my lawn and you cleaned it up, he would be more than welcome. The woodland creatures comment was trying to point out that it's ridiculous that someone is getting upset that a dog pooped on their lawn and the owner cleaned it up, when animals crap on your lawn all the time and it sits there. I hope that clears it up a bit.

How long will it be before someone comes on to say that they saw dogs in a few restaurants in Europe, as if this is some kind of evidence that dogs in restaurants is a good idea, or even that it is common across Europe (it's not)?

My English DH's family hates the "law of right of way" because it means stupid, entitled idiots walk through their property and think it is OK for their brats to shriek and run at their horses, or for their dogs to bark at them. They have neighbors whose sheep herd suffered a mass miscarriage epidemic because an idiot who was on their property because of the "law of right of way" thought it was acceptable to allow their brats to chase the sheep to see them run (sheep miscarry easily when frightened). The mother argued with the sheep owners when they came out and demanded that she collect her children and leave, saying that "they didn't know, they were just having a bit of fun!" So maybe YOU loved the way "law of right of way" in England meant you could trudge across other people's land, but many of the actual landowners hate it, and hated seeing you there.

And mentioning that a law, or anything else, exists in England does not make you cool or sophisticated.

I don't let my dog poop on anyone's yard. Some people are team "it's just grass," but I believe it's "just grass" that's not mine.

It's just rude to let your dog wander in people's yards when you're on a walk.

Dog owners who let their dog off leash in public parks are a-holes. Your dog should only be off leash IN the dog park.

And as for dogs that jump on people, well, that's just lazy training by the owner. I've owned lots of dogs and fostered plenty as well through the years and all have been trained to NOT jump. Whether on people, at the table, on kitchen counters, etc. Very basic skill that even older dogs can learn.

I've not seen dogs IN restaurants in DC where I work or VA where I live. I can remember seeing maybe one service dog in a restaurant during a lunch meeting in DC, but that's it. I've seen plenty of dogs on patios at restaurants. Not sure if you count that, OP, but I'm okay with this scenario. I know of a lot of restaurants who have Pups on the Patio and Mutts & Martinis type events, especially where I live in VA. It's rare to go to a restaurant in my hometown, get seated outside, and not have a least one dog on the patio.

I'm a dog person to the max. I love my dogs with all of my heart but I wouldn't let them do any of the things you've mentioned.

I think OP is correct, there are many dog owners that act irresponsibly and infringe on the rights of others. That also applies to parents of children.
PS - all this encroaching began when you could no longer leave them in the car - oh for the 60s again!

I do have cat fur all over a lot of things, but dogs shed too, and at the same times of year, so that point is not relevant. But I don't smell like cat pee. Dogs stink far worse than cats. I don't think one can say one animal smells worse, or sheds worse, though. And I don't hate dogs themselves. The topic of the post is dog PEOPLE, not dogs.
