Do you go with extended family? That is what makes it fun for us. It's like our annual family reunion. And we have been doing it ever since we were small, and now introducing a new generation to it. (And, actually, the older ones have been doing it ever since THEY were small, so it is a 3-generation get-away!).

we do. The idea of renting a house and vacation with others does not appeal to me.

We've done it, but takes a lot of work and coordination. Easier just to get a hotel room and have other friends book there as well!

I recently went to an all-inclusive Caribbean resort with a bunch of friends. We were all on the beach when I said, "hey, do you guys want to go into the city and check out the museum about the Caribbean slave trade?" They all laughed at me. I went anyways. It was fascinating and depressing. Diff'rent strokes.

We do a good job of finding beach rentals near uncrowded beaches. And my kids (currently 6 and 9) are never calmer or more zen than when they are digging in the sand and splashing in the waves. We spend hours and hours out there. Its so relaxing. I love it.

We prefer the Florida beaches.

Yes and we love it. It is such a family bonding time. As our kids get older we may let them bring a friend.

I can understand why people don't like things other people like, but I can't understand why other people seem to think that what would be boring for them might be fun for another.

different strokes, OP. it is usually an opportunity for me to hang out with the family and do fun things unrelated to my job. I like sitting in the sun, I like reading, I like going for walks to look at pretty scenery, I like building sandcastles with my kids, I like to swim, I like to boogie-board. I like switching back and forth between the hot hot summer heat, the cool splashing water, and the breezy patio. Usually, we'll rent a boat one day, and a few surfboards for a day to mix it up a bit. Things I don't do: shop, drive anywhere, do any work.

Family members take turn cooking dinner; so there's a fabulous home-cooked meal every night for a week and I only have to cook once.

Before I had kids, it was also superrelaxing. Not so much now. But still fun.

We go to the small private beach at the end of the season. Barely any kids. Yes, we're all tourists of course. Mostly european.

Which beaches do you go to? Most large public beaches suck. Bethany, Dewey, even the cramped part of Virginia beach. You just have to know where to go, where you're not cramped like a bunch of sardines baking in the hot sun.

Also do you have a tent/shade? That's key to make it comfortable to be out all day. And/or beachfront access so you can just walk back to the house for a cold one.
