You could buy him a cheaper used iPhone to only use on wifi.

I hate iPhones and prefer Android and adults who aren't willing to deal can find someone new to talk to. But high school kids are difficult and peer pressure is real. It depends on what you DC wants to do about it and how much money you have.

The money isn't an issue- my samsung is the same price as the iphone. the shitty friends are the issue.

I have a rising freshman, and most of the kids have iphones. We're an android family, but let the kids get iphones so they can better communicate with their friends. Yes, there are options other than facetime and imessage, but most kids (and parents) these days are technologically clueless and aren't interested in something that might be slightly different. They've been facetiming for years, so facetime is all they'll use. Same with imessage. I don't like it but with all the group work kids have to do for school, and coordinating with sports teams, it just made it easier to let the kids get iphones.

If you ask around, you might be able to find someone who has an old iphone. Then you could let your kid use it on your wifi.

We had that issue here at the beginning of the year. All of my son's friend's except for two have iPhones. They weren't able to join in the group chat with the iPhone users. My son gave his old iPod to one of the friend's to use to join in and the other's parents bought him a used iPod.

iPods are much cheaper than an iPhone, so you could go that route, OP.

My son's friends do group chats in iPhones, and when they're getting together one just calls him. It's not that they don't like him, they're just lazy/clueless/teens. Bummer, but not personal.

WhatsApp of Google hangouts.

We prefer him to use google hangouts because we can also monitor what they send. Alternative is also whatsapp. iMessage chews up data big time and doesn't have option to only download when you have wifi. When I told my teen that, he switched. Recommended to his friends and they all switched to WhatsApp too. Sounds like your teens friends don't really get along well with him/Her.

My teen's inexpensive phone plan has unlimited texts through iMessage but very few texts per month outside of iMessages. She was racking up bills in her group chats with non iPhone users. Nothing personal. She'd usually ask to be removed from the group chat but it seemed they would remove the Android person instead.

Really? I'm a grown up, and have no idea what kind of phones all the people in my group chats have. They all seem to work fine.

Try WhatsApp. I use it a lot for group chats with iPhone/android users from around the world. No problem for any of us & we do a lot of image/movie exchanges besides normal chats.

It doesn't bother me when things send as text vs. iMessage but when my softball team has a group text with a mix of iPhone and android, the android responses either come back as a single response or it somehow only sends to part of the group, starting a NEW group message that everyone is not a part of. It drives me insane.

why isn't it a pain to use a software only some people had?

this just hasn't come up in my life as a problem, despite having an android.
