Obviously if you tell a police officer "I have a gun!" you may spook them. He should have said something like this:

How would you like me to proceed?” Notice we said ‘have one on my person’. From the Videos I've seen both the initial contact video from the dash cam to the Facebook live video of the inside of the car which starts after the shooting. it looks like a questionable shoot, but I haven't seen all the evidence that was presented at trial so there is likely evidence that I am unaware of.

I just read the summary of the Castile incident and I can understand how it happened. Why did he say "I have a gun?" Saying that implies that you are threading to shoot the police officer. The police officer didn't ask, so there was no need to tell him.
