Some whole-wheat brands add a ton of sugar to make it moderately palatable. Compare the ingredient list and actual sugar content - not just overall carbs - to a good-quality white bread and you might be surprised.
It's like bran muffins. For years they were marketed as the "healthy" muffin. Turns out they usually have far more sugar than a normal blueberry muffin. When I make whole-grain bread at home, I usually add honey or maple syrup, while my white bread just has flour/salt/yeast/water and sometimes a bit of dairy.
The extra fiber is good, yes, but there are tradeoffs.
