Well, they may have changed the name of "Young Men of Color" school to be more welcoming to all, but DCPS is quite clear that the Reign program is for "young women of color."

Antoine Wilson's email about it today says, "The data shows that we need to support our young women of color in several ways. For example, Black female students have the lowest student satisfaction among all DCPS students at 77 percent, compared with 92 percent for white female students. Across all students in DC, 25 percent of female middle school students have had suicidal thoughts, compared to 15 percent of male middle school students, and 34 percent of high school female students in DC report feelings of sadness or hopelessness, compared to 20 percent of male high school students."

Note that those statistics are about female vs male students, except for the one bout the DCPS survey. So white girls are excluded because they answered more positively.

I would think that a racially-integrated program for girls would help foster a connection across between all girls. But, no.

Racial segregation is alive and well in DC.

I think it would be great for DC residents of ALL colors to support this school. Men need good male role models and I think male teachers provide a benefit to schools.

I also think all people of color deserve to be able to go to a school where there are teachers and role models of color too.

I cannot imagine any family protesting because a white or Asian male wanted to attend this school. I imagine that a white or Asian male would also succeed at a school even if all the teachers were black/Latino and that's because there are many role models for white/Asian men (and some amazing ones for blacks/Latinos too such as Malcolm XYZ, Cesar Chavez etc but not on the same scale).

I don't understand why we cannot support each other more and want to tear each other down.

The definition of "diversity" you seem to be working with is exactly the opposite. Banneker is not diverse. No school that is 99% populated by one ethnic group is diverse. That Washington Latin school seems to be doing that diversity thing quite well. The white folks I know would try to saddle a mule in order to get in there -- but they can't get in, along with tons of others waiting in line. Doesn't that example display an interest by white folks in attending a fully diverse school?

Banneker is hard to get to if you live a stretch away from Banneker. It also lacks diversity, so if you have diversity as a value (and many don't!) Banneker would not be a draw.

Single sex public schools are permitted by the U.S. Department of Education and not unconstitutional when they conform to federal regulations. Look it up or would you rather continue to spread your uninformed speculations? Also, where does it state the school is only for black and brown young men? Just like Banneker is open to ALL, certain any white families interested would be able to enroll their ds. You get an F for effort.

So there was a DC school approved in 2017 that's for blacks only? There are schools open in the city today that limit enrollment to blacks only? Outrageous! What are the names of these schools? This is not OK and I want to write the Post about this!

Personally, I'm skeptical. However since it's no big deal to anyone else, I'd rather enroll my daughter with only Asian girls and some white girls to take up the other empty seats (since there are so few Asians in DC).

I trust no-one has any problems with this.

I think you should do some research as to why black males might need a school catered to them. And if you're still going to throw these kind of comments around then it's a you problem and you can continue to live in your privlidged bubble.

(And why is this even still an argument when it has been shown in his thread that the school isn't just for males of color)
