We use the silver that was inherited. I don't ever plan to replace it, though I did add new steak knives several years ago.

My parents had the same set for 40 years, I think my mom ended up with a new set a few years ago. We've had the same silverware for 10 years, and I like it, so I don't foresee replacing it. It doesn't leave the house. I have a few leftover utensils from my grad school days, so if I want to pack a real fork or something, I use those.

I don't do it for honor. I do it for practicality. I am very creative and into the performing arts. I don't need my cutlery to inspire me. I bought a set that seemed like it would last a long time, that was comfortable to hold, and that would go with any dishes. Basically, I wanted it to be boring. And I don't WANT to replace things all the time. I recycle and compost as much as I can. I'm not going to add to landfills because I'm bored. If I'm bored I'll go read a book or talk to someone or go to a museum or choreograph a dance or make up a new recipe.

I'm impressed with the people who have held onto silverware for decades. My parents still have the set they had when I was a kid, so I guess that's standard?

We got what we thought was a beautiful set for our wedding six years ago, but are thinking of replacing it. We've managed not to lose any - remarkable, because we are both pretty prone to losing things - but the silverware just hasn't been holding up well. The spoons are discolored, and the forks are looking shabby as well. The way we are, I don't think we will get a new set that's meant to last forever - just, a reasonably priced set we like, I expect.

+1. Don't you have more interesting things to do with your time and money? I got a very high quality set for my wedding and never intend to replace it.

Put us in the category of having the same cutlery for a long time. It has been almost 30 years. We've added to it because the family got bigger (from just the two of us to all eight of us) but we just mix and match. I think it is interesting that people have lost cutlery. We did have one spoon go into the disposal once so it is a little ragged but we still use it ... if you haven't guessed, I'm pretty frugal! And, honestly, I still like the 2 patterns so I can't imagine wanting anything different anyways!

We have a combination of silverware that includes the set we got for our wedding 17 years ago and the set my mom got using green stamps in the 1970s. We have lost pieces (mostly spoons). It took me awhile to figure out where they were going. My kids will occasionally throw one away by accident after eating something like a yogurt. Once I figured that out everyone double checks and it hasn't happened again. Not worth stressing over either.

We are thinking of getting a new set soon so that we have enough that match if we have guests over for dinner

We've had the same set since we got married 16 yrs ago.

My parents are still using the cutlery from their wedding gifts -- 50 years ago. It's still attractive and works just fine. They did add some spoons along the way (those seem to be the ones that get lost or mangled in the garbage disposal).

I bought a big set of good stainless about 25 years ago, and it's still going strong. I love the pattern, but it's discontinued, and I don't want to pay an arm and a leg at Replacements for more. It took my husband 15 long, annoying years to grasp that leaving teaspoons in the sink led to them getting roughed up in the garbage disposal, so I'd like to replace a bunch of those.

I'm a different person and also don't let my kids eat in the car. They can drink water - that's it. We don't do any car trip longer than two hours though.

Silverware...I pretty much never lose it, since I don't take it out of the house. So I still have the same set we got when we moved in to our first condo, and it works great. We also have a sterling set that we basically use for holidays.

In 10 years I have never needed a knife sharpened. With heavy use. I do hone the edge but...

If you cook a lot, you would know. My husband sharpens our knifes once a month/every two month. I take them every 6-10 month to professional.
