Similar here. I'm AA, and grew up middle class in the South. I don't know anyone personally who's affected by heroin or opiate abuse. I only keep in contact with a handful of my high school friends (h.s. was 50/50 black/white), but haven't heard of any problems related to either heroin, opiates, or any other substances.

I guarantee you know people who have problems. They just aren't very open about it. You folks think drug abuse is limited to white folk?

I never said that; I simply answered the question asked re: heroin. I also explained that I don't keep in contact with a lot of people I went to high school with, who were both black and white. You made the above leap in logic.

I do have a few people in my family who've had problems with alcohol--one is black; the rest are another race (I'm multiracial). Never heard of anyone in my family/current social networks trying any drugs besides marijuana.

Of course it's a mostly white person issue, that is why politicians care.

Back then heroin was cut more and not as strong. Also was not cut with fentanyl and carfentenile (spelling, elephant tranquilizer). The cut is a large part of the OD's these days

Another immigrant here. I remember the crack epidemic affecting mostly black urban people (and hence they were put in jail for it rather than treated for their ''disease of addiction'). In contrast it seems like the current opioid epidemic is mostly a white person problem. It's sad either way imo.

Yes, DH's mom has been using on and off since we've been together . Lost custody of his younger brother, stolen repeatedly including DH's graduation money (literally opened the envelope, stole the money, and gave an empty envelope), she's always "getting help" but he's essentially had all limited communication with her. She doesn't know either of her grandchildren. I used to feel like such an awful person until I realized it's not my responsibility to facilitate the relationship when she won't quit.

How did that happen?

Husband got hooked on pain meds and made the move to heroin. She has never been a very strong person so followed him in to it. They are both currently taking suboxone. Really awful for everyone they touch especially their kids.

How is this working for them?

She hasn't had any slips in about three years. Not sure about him. I believe he has, but it is a difficult subject. She also is in counseling. I don't know that she can ever stop the suboxone.

Kid is better off with a dead mother than a junkie in his/her life.

so sad.

No, it's not. Heroin users are garbage people. They destroy the lives of everyone around them and then they destroy themselves. The faster they die, the better off everyone else is.
