Freelancer. You set your own hours, so the more you work, the more you make. In IT, it's easy to get work doing software development, and the billing rate is $100-200/hour.

Lobbyist for a large trade association. $143K base + at least 10% bonus. 40 hours a week. Occasional later night (later meaning around 7pm), travel 3x year. Its a pretty sweet gig.

I'm a prof and say the same. It's 3:08pm right now. I've been correcting final papers from home and am now off to pick up the critters. Summers off, so it was no problem pulling DD out of the second session of camp last summer when it didn't seem a good fit for her. She hung out with me for a few weeks before school started. I can take DS to therapy each week without taking time off. It's great. The pay is not. That's the trade off. I get to do what I love and they basically get a SAHM.



+1. Taking a break from grading papers to skim DCUM before picking up the kids from school

But, a lot of things have to fall into place in order to get a tenured position. There are a lot of hard-working smart PhDs out there for whom that brass ring is out of reach through no fault of their own.

i make 53k but only work, like, 5 hours a week. i have another full job to fill the time and i still have too much free time

My job fits the bill--I work at a nonprofit, but in a niche role that isn't easy to replace.

pharmacy. flexible shifts. no extra work to do at home outside of shifts. stable employment at about 130K/year for 40 hours. my friend did one 8 hour shift/weeks when her kids were little and now does three 8 hour shifts and will go to full-time in a year or two when her kids are a bit older.
