You said your kid was at APS; the quarter just ended yesterday so doesn't seem likely he would have an assignment over break unless he got an extension for something that is overdue. My son has AP and IB classes and he doesn't have that much homework ever and he has no assignments over spring break.

This is the decision we made.

Individually, the assignments don't sound hard or time consuming, but collectively it becomes a lot. That's your problem right there. Why should your English teacher not assign to read 200 pages...bc you have an AP class in another subject to study for?

My DC said the subject matter he has to study and write about is important. He is just upset it was just dropped on them without warning. After the long walk and a night to let it all sink in, he's adjusted to doing the work. I just feel bad for him because he'll be working from 9 - 3 at a mini camp as well for the entire week.

The other thing is, I just feel my kid has already started on the rat race... for not much gain. We have a comfortable lifestyle and we've been working since 9 (husband), 15 for me. Husband works 70 hours/in a professional. It just seem everyone, kids and adults work more for less. I feel he earned the week off and he can't even take it. It is all rat race from here on. No wonder some of them are rebelling.

OP, it sounds like he procrastinated the reading assignments and 1 of the papers. Is that true? Several posters have asked and you have not responded to those questions. If he did procrastinate, stop lamenting the "rat race" and teach time management.

I've heard that before. I teach for FCPS and if that's a rule not all teachers adhere to it.

Teachers not adhering to FC rules????

A big plus....How accomplished and confident your child will feel when he gets all his work done.
