Jimmy Buffet.

My teen and I were talking about him today.

Buffet is up to 3 generations of fans of his music. He taps into something as a lyricist and creates a whole experience and lifestyle with his music.

How on earth does someone with so little singing talent singing about nothing whatsoever have such staying power across generations of people?

Like someone said earlier, the ones who tap into universal life experiences really are the generational artists.

Billy Joel stands out from the rest because of his strength as a songwriter and composer.

Christmas standards (Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Bing, etc)

Those songs will be around for generations to come. Everyone from the Greatest Generation to toddlers running around know the tunes and sing the songs.

As for 3 generations, my son also loves the Beach Boys.

Beach boys and the Beatles are really 4th generation artists

I'm mostly a rock girl but it's not so much the genre but the song. Most of the people/groups mentioned here (and I can't believe I haven't seen Queen mentioned) write kick ass songs. It's the song that stands the test of time, not the group.

I agree with Classical, Big Band, Motown, Sinatra, the Beatles, and Simon and Garfunkel.

I'm astonished nobody has mentioned Elvis.

Sousa Marches

Songs with associations to shared experiences:

Holidays - Auld Lang Syne, Christmas songs
Places - Star Spangled Banner, This Land is Your Land, La Vie en Rose, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, New York, New York
Religions - Amazing Grace will always be special to Christians. I know other faiths also have significant songs.
Events - Wedding March, Pomp and Circumstance, Taps, Take Me Out to the Ballgame

I love Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles” - that song is timeless

Prince. Elton. MJ. Bowie. The Beatles. All of these are timeless.

What does it mean to be a timeless artist? To me, I think it's producing a body of music that crosses many boundaries - age, race, gender, language, etc. In short, the most successful "timeless" music is high quality, expertly produced pop music.

I do think Bruno Mars will end up becoming a "timeless" artist - he's young and seems to be appealing to a wide cross section of the world. Time will tell.
