The rules need to change. No 18 year old should be in class with kids four years younger.

I'm confused. Were they in classes together or in the hall together?

How do you avoid your 9th grader having to be in potential classes with 18 year olds - legal or not legal? What if your 9th grader signs up for Spanish 101 and an 18 year old senior does as well (for an elective to graduate). Or a computer class. Or psychology. Or childcare.

You really cannot avoid this situation once your children reach high school.

My guess is they were in an ESL class together, but agreed that even if they weren't nothing is to stop an 18 year old from following any younger child into a bathroom. These immigrants have no doubt very little formal education, probably fifth grade educations if ANY, and no English and they become the schools responsibility. Many have gang affiliations, or deep trauma, or very poor understanding of how Americans regard sexual maturity in girls. In their countries (and often here when they emigrate and continue the pattern) girls or 14/15 may be fending off fairly aggressive advances. They come from extreme poverty and bring the dysfunction often seen there. I've worked with these types of students in alternative programs. The thought of popping them in high school and demanding the school find the resources to educate them is fascinating.

I know we're obligated to educate the illegal "kiddies," but does this requirement extend to adults of legal age? I mean, think of it. You could have a couple of illegal immigrants move here with half-a-dozen adult children, nieces, and nephews in their 20s, and plop them in high school so they'd get free breakfasts, lunch, and English lessons.

I don't know enough to comment on the immigrant situation, but I've seen bad things happen when an older teen is placed in a classroom 3-4 grade levels behind. This was in an area that attracts very few immigrants, legal or otherwise. It's bad policy on the part of the school districts.

Yes now there's an outcry. But before this people were screaming at schools to provide a free and reasonable education with ESL and language access to kids like this, one of whom was arrested by ICE crossing the border 7 months ago. But we have determined that American taxpayers owe these kids an education in the interim. What grade you want them in? Do you want to pay for an alternative HS? Some of these schools are fielding over 36 languages and needs.
