Another weird added bonus of TJ. Kids who go through the entire admissions process, though the semi-final round-- even unsuccessfully, BTW-- have a better handle on what the need to do to get into college, from Day 1 in high school. Grades, Extracurriculars, Teacher recommendations, essays, entrance test. They have been through the process once, and know how it works, and that each piece matters. And they know what it feels like to wait for the admissions answer, while hoping you had done enough. That's a perspective that most freshmen don't have when parents fuss about grades or getting involved in extracurriculars. TJ kids have made the process work once and seen it pay off. And, I have certainly heard of kids who have been much more motivated in HS after not getting into TJ, either because they want to prove that TJ was wrong to reject them, or because they want to leave everything on the field and not get rejected by their dream college.

Re: guaranteed admission to UVA & other selective college...from UVA's website:

"Nearly half of the 600 transfer students who enroll in the fall started their higher education in the Virginia Community College System."

What is missing in the argument is the lowest student at TJ will be in the top 10-15% at a base school. The average student would be in the top 5%. At schools like madison, langley, Oakton, etc about 10% of the class is accepted to UVA/ W &M.

Maybe, maybe not. I argue that my kid would not have grown as much as a learner in the base school. Really difficult to say that students would automatically be super stars at the base. I do know that more opportunities are opened up to these kids when they have the courage to take a risk and attend TJ.

If you're from Buchanan, Dickinson, or Wise counties where the coal comes from and you get a 2310, they roll out the red carpet. Not for my Nova kid though.

Last year, TJ had about a 2/3 acceptance rate to UVA around 450 graduates (348 applied/ 224 admitted). Also WM & VA Tech had over an 80% acceptance rate from TJ (213/174 VA Tech and 211/173 WM). Consider many of the kids applying to UVA and VATech are applying to the Engineering schools, which are even more rigorous.

Once again, I can't fathom declining an opportunity to learn and be intellectually challenged, just to GAME the system of college acceptances. And yes, the above PP is correct about those TJ stats.
