Better to be in a mediocre-plus high school.
+1...this is the reason our son declined TJ and went to his base HS.
-1 a) You declined opportunities available at TJ. b) Higher percentage of TJ kids (almost 50%) get accepted at UVA. c) Apart from UVA, the percentage of TJ kids going to other good colleges is very high. d) On an average, a kid going to UVA from TJ is going to prepared better for college rigor than a kid going to UVA from base school due to TJ curriculum rigor.

What is missing in the argument is the lowest student at TJ will be in the top 10-15% at a base school. The average student would be in the top 5%. At schools like madison, langley, Oakton, etc about 10% of the class is accepted to UVA/ W &M.

Last year, TJ had about a 2/3 acceptance rate to UVA around 450 graduates (348 applied/ 224 admitted). Also WM & VA Tech had over an 80% acceptance rate from TJ (213/174 VA Tech and 211/173 WM). Consider many of the kids applying to UVA and VATech are applying to the Engineering schools, which are even more rigorous.

Are you sure declining TJ to get into UVA was a good call?

Yes. But I don't think it's been determined whether UVA looks at NOVA applicants as a group, or ranks them against their high school peers.
