My friend had one growing up. I think we were 11 when she got it. We rode that thing all the time in wooded areas, carving out paths etc. No helmet. Pulled each other on a sled in the snow. I'm amazed we never got hurt or worse. I have very mixed feelings about them now. I had tons of fun in them but as an adult I can see the danger.

If the water temperature is very cold, her chances of recovery are much better. Kids have drowned in near freezing water for 20-30 minutes and survived. It's probably not so freezing that far south, though.

There's no way to know if the reported "minutes" are accurate. It's not like someone was standing there with a stopwatch. I would think 2 minutes is wishful thinking. Obviously, it was long enough to put her in critical condition.

Chances are, she's in a medicated coma for at least a few days before they will try to assess how much brain damage occurred.

Sounds really bad. There is that Olympic swimmer, Amy something? who was parlyzed riding one of those dumb things. Very dangerous. Hope the girl is ok but it doesn't sound good for her brain

I grew up in a rural area. People "with money" (for the area) and a big chunk of land had ATVs. I didn't know a single family with an ATV that didn't have a horror story involving near-death. But, you know, every one of them was a "freak accident."

One family's 16-year-old ran his into a string of barbed wire at chest level that he didn't realize was there. Yep.

Didn't read the article. Does Jamie Lyn Spears still live in Lousiana, where they're originally from? These type of activities might be more common in rural areas, where there's more land to play around in.

It's just sorta the norm in LA to do things like ride an ATV, wear camo, hunt, etc.

I'm surprised that it was only 2 minutes (120 seconds). I've called the ambulance before (which is only a few blocks from our house) and it took longer than 2 minutes to get to our house.

If she was really submerged for several minutes, is there any way she can still be ok and totally back to normal?

So so horrible. Been praying for her since I first saw. Hope she makes it out ok and completely normal
