Kerry & Carrie might sound very similiar but they are entirely different names with entirely different orgins.Carrie is a diminutive of Caroline or Carol. Kerry comes from the Irish surname & county (Keri & Kerri are alternate spellings of Kerry).

I say Kerry, Carrie, Keri, Kari, Cary, and carry all the same way: care-ee. I'm from the South.

Also pronounce Mary, merry, marry the same way: mare-ee

Not saying the way I pronounce it is correct and it makes sense that they should be pronounced differently but it's hard to overcome the pronunciations you learned as a kid so I'm pretty sure I'll always hear (and say) these words this way.

Also from New England. Also think of Carrie and Kerry as too COMPLETELY different names. I love the sound of Kerry. Don't care for Carrie. Saying they are the same is like saying Tom and Tim are the same name with different spellings. Different vowels. Different sounds.

No, there's a slight difference.

Also, I'm from the Midwest and pronounce Kerry like merry, Carrie like marry.

+1. I'd think, someone must really like Scandal.

I know three women named Kerry. One is short for Kerryanne. I don't know any men named Kerry.

How do you say them differently? They are the same .

Nope. My HS class had a Carrie and a Kerry. One, obviously, is pronounced with an /a/ sound and the other with an /e/ sound.
Kerry rhymes with Berry.
Carrie rhymes with Larry.

Maybe I'm just out of touch, but to me, Kerry, Berry, Carrie and Larry all rhyme with each other.

Agreed. How are you pronouncing Berry? It rhymes with Larry! Are you saying "Burry"?

Maybe this will help: Do you pronounce "men" and "man" the same?

Kerry rhymes with merry (men), while Carrie rhymes with marry (man). Its the difference between men and man.

I think this is an East Coast thing. I grew up on the West Coast and we don't differentiate between Kerry and Carrie. Both are pronounced like Kerry.

Nope, you pronounce them both like Carrie. Trust me on this.

This is why I wouldn't name a kid Kerry, though I too really like the name. I'm from New England and the names Kerry and Carrie are very distinct to me. Outside of the northeast, IME, most people pronounce Kerry like I pronounce Carrie. It would perpetually annoy me, so I would choose something else. JMO.

Anonymous wrote:I'd prefer a different spelling. Carrie is nice. Kerry is just too John Kerry reminding.

"Too John Kerry reminding"?

Try "too evokotive of John Kerry" or "too reminiscent of John Kerry"...or just don't type anything.

You like the name because people named Kerry are usually chill as f*ck.
