Somehow I just noticed tonight that she
is showing some common signs of puberty.
In all other ways she's a typical little girl and actually is late to give up her barbies, beanie-boos and stuffed animals.
Also, I haven't noticed any of the hormonal moodiness yet. But physically, there are some changes. She's got a check-up coming up but wondering what others have experienced in terms of the age at the start of puberty.
I'm hoping that her menstrual cycle holds off until she is more mature.
She is completely normal, at her next check up the nurse will probably talk to her about puberty.
Have you talked to her about periods yet? Now might be a good time.
Perhaps start weening her off toys now, by 11 they are getting too old for toys.
Be grateful she is not moody yet, some 10yr olds can be right moody monsters lol.

If she still enjoys toys, let her play with toys! Kids groe up fast enough as it is!
FWW, my childhood best friend & I played with dolls occasionally until the end of seventh grade. We had also been babysitting for well over a year by that point & were very mature & responsible 99% of the time. We just liked dolls! I'm glad our parents let us hold on to that little bit of childhood instead of "weaning us off of" it before we were ready.
Seriously- my dd is 10 and will get her period any day. She loves barbies and toys, and being a little girl- don't listen to the PP above that says to wean off toys. They are kids!

I'm 40, started my period just before I turned 11 (ie. I was still 10) and was hardly the first girl in my group to get it. This is nit an example of "earlier and earlier". This is an example of normal.
Nothing like DCUM to illustrate ignorance.
It was NOT normal. back when you were 11. Puberty is coming earlier and earlier for girls now. And it's worrisome to scientists.

np, yes, 11 was in the range of normal.30 years ago. That is when both my mother and I got our periods. There is always a range. Perhaps you should check your condescending tone.
Check your facts.
The idea that girls are reaching sexual adolescence earlier than ever before is nothing new - for years, researchers have noticed that women are getting their periods earlier and earlier - the average age for menstruation to start is now 13, compared to 16 or 17 at the turn of the last century.
It's hormones and obesity, unfortunately.

I'm 46 years old and got my period in 4th grade. So, its not like it didn't happen. And my friends were not that far behind me.

Anonymous wrote:I think it's right in time bc the first period is usually 2 years after the first sign of puberty. So if 12 is average for menarche, then 10 is average.
