To the OP, I would personally never even consider paying $2500 for 23 hours of relative comfort. That is a mortgage payment on my 3k sf house!

What airline are you flying? are there any stopovers?

At first pass - yes I would totally consider paying $2500 for the upgrade. BUT it really matters what airline you're flying, and if you're flying direct.

We've managed to snag a lot of long first/business class flights through points and fare sales, and my God it's been glorious. We don't spend a lot on clothes/cars/luxury items... traveling is our luxury. The upgrade makes the entire trip so much more pleasant - from not stressing about carryon and checked luggage limits, airport lounges, comfy flights, etc .... it's worth it!

I am in Africa. I came in business and am leaving in coach+. Considering starting a new life here.

It actually pains me to think of spending that much money on something so unnecessary. If you can't think of anything to spend it on that you would enjoy, don't like the idea of putting it into savings, think what a donation of that amount could do.

Do what makes you comfortable.

I traveled in coach a few months ago to Asia while 5 months pregnant. There was an option to upgrade to 1st class for 2k (one way), but I was too cheap for it. Did I survive? Obviously. I didn't feel too uncomfortable, everything considered. But I know I spend way more than my peers on certain services (dental care, for instance), so who's to say how you should spend your money?

OP, my general advice is yes. Would also be good to know where you are headed an which airline as business class varies greatly. I lived in Africa and have also traveled to nine African countries. I've flown coach, business and first.

The main reason I say to go for business is that it greatly reduces what can sometimes be an onerous experience. You will get priority boarding/security and be able to avoid what can sometimes long lines for check in and security. You will get lounge access. You will get better food and a more comfortable seat. It just makes the trip easier and more comfortable. Secondly, most coach fares are already around $1000, which is a lot to pay when you consider the long lines, etc.

Now, some airlines like Iberia don't really have (or didn't when I was traveling a lot) business class even though they offer a biz class ticket. Instead, the give you three economy seats to yourself. In my view, that wasn't worth it.

You have the money. Do it.

Flown to Africa many times. First class is worth every penny

Is the marginal increase in personal comfort worth that? It would be for me -- I fly all the time, always in coach, and I survive. Business class definitely looks more comfy, but I can think of a lot better ways to spend $2,500 on travel.

just returned from a 20+ hr trip in coach and it was fine. Sure first class looked super comfy and i was a little envious, but I would rather use the money I saved on another trip or experience.

In the end though OP, you need to decide what is important to YOU and where you choose to spend your money. If business class will give you joy then go for it.
