Yuck

As long as you go off peak times it is not an issue. Or do what we do and don't take 95 at all. 210 South, cut over and pick up 301 south of Waldorf and then take 17 to 64.

Anonymous wrote:If you want laid back, check out Topsoil Beach. It's like OBX in terms of no boardwalk, etc. but less crowded and popular, simply because it's a smaller strip of land compared to OBX. We went there last year with my family and were able to get a beachfront property literally steps away from the water (although we went in September which is off-season). During high tide, the beach disappeared a little, but otherwise the beach was clean and beautiful with soft sand and temperate waters.

If you leave early in the morning, 95 South isn't a problem. We leave around 4:30 a.m. and we fly right down 95. It's obviously a really early start, but the bonus is that we are on the beach in the OBX before noon. We also leave early when we return to DC, to avoid the traffic on 95 North.
I like Rehoboth too, and that drive is short enough for a weekend. We leave early for that drive as well.
You could leave at 6 AM and beat most of the traffic. It all depends on where you are starting from.
To the person that complains about driving everywhere, OBX is not Atlantic City, or Ocean City. People go to OBX to get quiet.
I think there's more than one PP complaining about driving. You know that OBX is quiet, and I know that it is, but OP is not from the east coast and might be expecting a happening beach town vibe. You don't really get that there. I actually don't care for the Atlantic City type tourist traps, but I'd still be bored after 2 weeks in OBX.

OP here--looking for a laid back beach vibe--think Malibu, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz (minus the boardwalk), or parts of Kauai. OBX is much more appealing to me than some of the DE places from what I've read. Looks like OBX has surfing, stuff for kids, and is really laid back. A relaxing and pretty place to be with the family and friends for 2 weeks.

I've done VRBO and HomeAway which have merged.
IMO the very best place to stay in Cape May is Sandpiper Beach Club - right by the beach, pool, kitchens, updated & very clean, beach service (umbrellas, drinks, lunch - no need to pack everything). There is also the Beach Shack which has the same set up - not quite as nice but is also cheaper. Looks like $5k for 2 weeks. They are both affiliated with the old grand hotel there, Congress Hall, which hosts children's activities and has restaurants. Very fun and relaxing beach experience. Everything is all right there. You won't need to drive at all.

I think OBX would be perfect for what you want. It's also possible to be right by the beach.
