The Wellesley-MIT exchange is awesome. As an architecture major, I took all of my studio classes at MIT. Wellesley has exchanges with other schools too. For example, one of my friends took business classes at Babson.

I worked at Mount Holyoke 20 years ago. The students were a delightful mix of legacy, non-legacy smart American and international, quirky and traditional, though usually fairly socially liberal. They had great extra-curricular opportunities, the students were hard-working but with a sense of fun. Some wished for a more active social life and some went to U Mass and found it. There was a lesbian presence for sure, and they spanned the gamut as well. There were also a number of American students who had grown up abroad, usually due to their parents work. I think they found it sort of cozy with strong academics; nice when their family was still abroad but they wanted to feel "at home." I think the academics and opportunities are still excellent. I don't know if the "vibe" has changed. I'd happily send one of my kids there.

My mother and grandmother are Bryn Mawr alumnae and were active in the alumnae organizations and interviewing. Both fully admit that the quality of students matriculating at Bryn Mawr in the last 20 or so years is a step down from the days when the Ivies were still single-sex. The cream of the crop now goes to the Ivies or other top coed colleges. Hillary Clinton, for example, would not have gone to Wellesley today but to HYP. Haverford, Bryn Mawr's traditional brother school, now has noticeably higher SAT averages. Many of the women's colleges have kept their enrollment numbers up and finances healthy through aggressive overseas recruitment and BMC now has around 25% international students.

Having said that, BMC is still an excellent small LAC and a great school for the right student. The Seven Sisters have done a decent job adapting to the new reality.

PP are you male or female? The reason I ask if you are a male than you don't understand that women need supportive environment especially in the fields that are male dominated. Men tend to dominate the discussion and if women are by themselves they won't get shouted down.

Some women can go toe to toe with men, but if they are like me a bit shy than I often would stifle my thoughts and opinions because I don't like a combative environment. Being with all women gives us confidence to find themselves and not worry about "looking pretty". The chance of rape also goes down as well. Same with historically black colleges...which whites are allowed but, don't dominate. Do you object to that?

After all for many years colleges and universities were all male! Let's give us a chance ok?

But, if you are a women and think this way....than you probably are a Trump supporter and I can't say anything to change your mind.

I'm talking about now. Do I really have to give you a history lesson? I already know why the ivy league opened it up to women; and assume you do too. I agree with this . . . anyone have recent information on whether this is a valid perception?

I am a grad of all-girls high school, and although my parents dragged me to visit a couple of the 7 sisters, I wouldn't hear of it. I was done with being cloistered, and I did actually get a feeling that I would not fit in. The women I met (albeit very briefly and superficially) seemed to be of two extremes: the majority seemed very far left/"militant" (very butch in many cases) and then a minority that seemed like a total pretty Stepford-wives-throwback (pearls & demure).

What are 7 sisters students like today?

over in the relationship forum, teachers are saying there is a rise of lesbianism in high school girls.

so wouldn't that mean all girls school should be more popular?

Also Smith and Mount Holyoke are in the 5 ville consortium--with Amherst, UMass Amherst and Hamoshire. You can take classes at any of the others (and others can come too). I enjoyed taking advantage of that.

I have a friend that briefly attended Smith, legacy several generations back but very smart on her own. This was a decade or two ago, but she found it very far left (and she is extremely liberal), and frankly, a large percentage of the women were lesbians and she felt that limited social life for those who werent'. She stayed in touch with quite a few of her friends, but ultimately transferred to a top ranked co-ed school.

I'd go for it. What those schools have is a commitment to producing science students and students ready for a masters in engineering. Obviously not an option, but Smith is otherwise the perfect school for my son.
