Please, does the nephew do house calls? My mom has been going for 48 hours now. She expects all of us to sit on couches and be an audience the entire time. The dog is footsore because walking him is the only valid excuse for escape, and everyone is pretending that my cooking made them sick (me included) so we can take turns hiding in the bathroom. Frankly, this entire thread could be my family replying to each other from the bathroom.

My mother... doesn't lead the examined life. Every single thought she has is vomited out immediately. I think silence makes her nervous.

I used to feel that way about my mom and MIL. And then SIL began dating this guy last year (now her DH, to the great dismay of pretty much everyone), and good Lord, he never shuts up, never gives any indication of having thought "do I need to say this?" Just endless word vomit. I swear he spent 20 minutes at lunch yapping on and on about the hush puppies we ordered.

It took every ounce on control not to laugh hysterically when he was in the middle of yet another inane stream of pointless blathering this afternoon, my nephew, his stepson, bursts out "Shut up! You never stop talking!" (Yes, it was rude. But.......)

An increase in garrulous digessions is a normal part of the aging process. Look it up. It's better than depression, so enjoy your relatives while they are garrulous and alive.

I'm one of the PPs - for my mom, it's not that she talks about herself. She just talks. For example, we're going on a xmas lights drive and we were planning times for dinner and the drive over considering I have a 3yo to account for. I said "6 is fine to eat" and she said "yeah I was thinking we have to eat, and then it takes a half hour to drive over blah blah blah" and I had to repeat "6 is fine." She has to give the inner monologue and discuss at length all the things she was thinking.

But I know part of this is that I don't say much. I don't have much to say to her. We don't have a lot in common. So I know the silence for her must be painful

My mom does not stop talking.

Lives nearby and we've travelled frequently, just the two of us. I've experimented by attempting to make it through an entire song on the radio...and nope...by my measure, there was never more than thirty seconds of silence.

My mom is judgmental and insanely self centered. As she's gotten older, she acts more dare I say, regal. Demanding of attention and considers silence rude. I have to literally leave the room to text or make a phone call or pretend to do so to get a moment of peace.

Also, she calls and starts taking. No pause, no nicetities, just yammers. She will call our house and talk to her grandchild and it is a one sided conv lasting for five minutes. Also she leaves messages that go on forever.

Because most women are naturally very self-centered.

This is my MIL to a T. Runs a monologue for her entire stay and it's all about her. Doesn't listen when other people talk. It's so annoying.

My mom is the same way and it's exhausting. Also same as other poster that we all just sit around together. I'm lucky I have a toddler and can get away with napping with her (and I'm pregnant).

For my mom I think it's anxiety when it's too quiet. I struggle because we don't have much in common and it's just yammering. Like a PP, I know she means well. But she has two things that bug me the most: 1) she laughs at everything she says. Again I think it's just anxiety, sharing something she thinks is funny. And 2) the worst thing is she thinks she is top-of-bell-curve normal and so when she talks about other people, she doesn't realize she's not necessarily "normal"

Has she always been this way, or is it new?
