Why do you think someone can't be impeached after their president?

It's been my impression that a president can be impeached only for conduct committed during his (or her!) presidency, but I'm no lawyer and could be wrong. It's actually unclear, so lawyers might weigh in here. In the meantime, for your reading pleasure....
