My son is reading level 7 books. They are very basic.

"Look at the dog run," said Dad.

My precocious little *W* got bored with English Lit and is now reading the Iliad in ancient Greek.

Reading group books started coming home for HW last week.

If you look at the back of the book or in the inside flap The level is printed somewhere in the book.

That would be level K and that is true for the end of 1st, but, not even close for the beginning. Very few are K (maybe 10%) at the beginning of 1st. I know bc I work in a W school.

For those who don't know the reading level - parent/teacher conferences are coming up - this is a perfect question.

do you mean reading level? It's on the back on the books the kids bring home in their reading bag, assuming they bring home a reading bag.

They don't. They have 'read to me talk to me,' which is a program about reading comprehension that encourages parents to read TO kids, and they are allowed to choose whatever book they want from the media center. They have reading groups at school but I don't know what they read there.

Then... I guess you'd have to ask the teacher. My kid brings home a reading bag every day with 1-2 guided reading books. Her "homework" is to read one of them to us, and we sign off on it. There a checklist with several assignments and the teacher checks off which one she's assigned. So far, it's been to choose one of the books to read, but some of the other options have to do with letters and letter sounds, so I'm guess students who have that homework are working on those skills for reading. One of the other options listed has to do with writing about the books, so again, I guess some kids are there or will be there eventually.

I don't know anything about the program, but "read to me, talk to me" sounds like perfect homework for all families! Sad how many parents actually don't do this.

No idea , how do we know this ? Are we supposed to be told by the teacher ? If so I have been told nothing. He can read most any children's book. I help with the big words. I think he is advanced personally but no one has told me that yet.

By the end of first grade, true. At the beginning of the year, not so. There is a small group.
