It sounds like a dream life for most women so they can't stand it when lorelei complains about stuff.

In what world is she hot?

I remember reading a story about the costume designer / stylist for that show always had to struggle with Lauren Graham ( Lorelei). The actress wanted to wear designer clothes and of course the character was a single working mom.
I did love the clothes on that show. Even years later, I would happily wear anything Lorelei wore on that show. Doesn't help that fashion for the last couple years has been atrocious, but that's another thread.

Who is TJ?

I know it's slightly off-topic since we're discussing Lorelai, but I have to get this off my chest: TJ is the most annoying character on any show, anywhere. Awful, awful, like nails on a blackboard awful. I have to pretty much skip any episode in which he features prominently.

There, I feel much better!

OMG, you hit the nail on the head.

The irrational hatred of her parents, the "I raised Rory all on my own speech" coupled with the fact that Luke did pretty much every home improvement/repair, Mia hired a high school drop out with a kid, the town provided child care, the magical "funds" that bought a single mom a house, eat take out every night, have a fantastic wardrobe, pay for her own college education...Life was pretty fricking rosy.

Interesting, that's what I liked about the show: I could totally relate to Lorelai's complicated and irrational attitude/feelings toward her parents. I thought the show did a great job of making it clear that Emily was not a horrible person - it wasn't black and white where Lorelai = laid back and not snobby! and Emily = uptight, rich snob! Lorelai WAS an irrational brat sometime - as a lot of grown women are around their moms.

I thought watching Lorelai struggle through her feelings about her upbringing and her parents was really relateable and I can't think of another show that nails the complexities between the parent/child and mother/daughter relationship so clearly.

Tell tell! Please! I'm dying over here! My co-workers asked me this morning if I watched GG and I had to admit that I tried but it just didn't work for me. They were shocked. Everyone is! "How can you not like it? It's perfect!"

PP-- what is your theory? Perhaps there is still hope for me?

Now it is all coming together! I'm one of the PP that couldn't figure why I hated GG when so many people love it and so many people thought I'd love it. I also hated Parenthood-- only tried two episodes and that was enough. I guess I just really, really hate that actress. That's weird, but I guess it happens.

Yeah, Lauren Graham really isn't a very good actress. Lorelai Gilmore seems to be perfectly written for her, but her character (and her portrayal of her character) on Parenthood sucks. Her family unit--couldn't really stand the actress everyone loves who plays her daughter on that show either, is what made Parenthood unwatchable to me.

That said, I think Lorelai is annoying but I still like GG and have watched the whole series a few times. I think if you get over feeling like you need to side with Lorelai on everything and just enjoy the weirdness of the town and even occasionally allow yourself to side with her mother it's a much better show.

I also agree that in many ways Lorelai is better matched to Christopher, though they never ever wrote that relationship in a way that worked. It's like they tried to assassinate his character intentionally as soon as they got married. I foresee a lot of challenges for her and Luke, since I think Luke actively discourages the best part of Lorelai which is her ability to find the fun in anything. Looking forward to the reboot regardless, though.

This is such an interesting comment, as I've never looked at it like this before. I LOVE Luke, but you're right - he does kind of squash all the zaniness out of Lorelai. He's such a great guy/character, but he doesn't get silly with her at all. Christopher, on the other hand, was always in on the joke with Lorelai, and deeply appreciative of her humor and wit. He totally "got" her. That said, I still prefer Luke, but you make a very good point.

Actually, I always thought the quick, witty dialogue is what separated this show from the usual melodramas.

I agree! It's based on the Howard Hawks movies from the 1930s, which I love.

I also talk incredibly fast and use lots of pop culture references, so I kinda relate to that...

Agreed! The other poster is such a hater! The only thing Lorelai "takes" (as an adult) is the tuition for Rory.

^me again. And so she can use all the witty esoteric banter she was given, act superior because of it, but then immaturely deny that the upbringing made her who she is.
