Don't go back to someone who tells you to tip more. That's crazy, and unprofessional. No one should be telling you how much you should tip them. I have a hard time believing this even happened.

I thought 15% was standard for salons and spas. My haircut is $70, I tip $10. When I had bangs she would trim them for free and I'd give her $10 each time.

I had a $65 massage last week and tipped $10.

20 percent, like pretty much everyone else here for hair and waxing. $5 to the person who washes my hair.

I do pedicures and gel nails, and that's 20 percent too, and I know that 20 percent is more than most people tip in NW DC (sort of sad).

I would have called this person's manager and asked her to take away the entire tip. That is outrageous. She should be fired.

20% to hair dresser plus $7-10 to shampoo lady.

I offer Mobile Spa Massage/nails. I do not expect tips and I make sure all my GUEST understand that my prices are included my entire services I want to accommodate in every single way.

I do work for myself, I drive to your house I do have my car cost but I do not pay rent or have employes.. I do have the knowledge of my prices so I think its not fair on top of my services expect tips. If someone buy my packages weekly, monthly and they want to give me something for christmas I do understand the intention. but not for an appto thing.

Yep.

Don't most good stylists rent their chair?! that's been the norm for like 30 years. so no, they aren't living off tips like a server. that doesn't mean I don't tip high but I'm not naive to think all service industry salaries before tips are the same. I went to college partially financed by my mom in the service industry

No, rudeness is what makes people think they can ask for more.

And, in my experience, people who say "tipping is out of control" are miserably cheap. Personal services are not glamorous, and they take skill to do well. Recognize that with a 20%+ tip.
