Which is exactly what's wonderful about it!

+1

And no boardwalk!

Stone Harbor is not one little street. There are a few streets with tons of cute shops. It's very quaint but tons of shops, restaurants etc in the downtown area. Beaches are private and beautiful and clean. Easy drive from DC and many of the reports have been completely redone and are oceanfront. Would recommend. We went this Summer.

There are .no private beaches in nj, all are public. Many require a the purchase of a.Weekly or seasonal pass.

You need to have a beach pass by either purchasing one or staying at a resort so it is sort of private.

Seriously? Have you been to the Bay Head Yacht Club?

Yes. I guess maybe it's "NJ preppy"...

Right, just like those faux preppies in Princeton.

Avalon and Stone Harbor have a lot of preppy wealthy types and also a nice mix of others. Very preppy beach town feel. Wild wood is 25 minutes away and although it is a bit cheesy it is amazing to visit with kids. Largest boardwalk I have ever been to. Three piers and tons of rides. My kids loved it.

Btw I am preppy and wealthy and it suits my taste just fine. ?

Rumson, at the gateway to the shore. Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Jon Stewart, live their along with their wall street neighbor types.

I think the whole southern Jersey shore is the "same crowd" - eg folks from my neighborhood are all basically similar and those of us who don't go to Bethany/Rehoboth or OBX go to either LBI (eg Beach Haven) or Cape/May/Avalon/Stone Harbor. All seem to have their upper/upper middle class subdivisions as well as upper middle class sections.

It's still under construction. Part of it is open. I would wait until next year when hopefully the construction is complete.

This is interesting. I stayed here twice with my girlfriends and it was decent, but by no means luxurious. The beach was the best thing about it. I think Cape May is much nicer than Avalon

Have you stayed this Summer? It has been completely redone and is basically brand new. 15 million dollar renovation. Very pretty

No, I haven't. Would be interested to see the renovation.

Are Avalon and stone harbor bascoally the same crowd etc?

Oh gosh some people are such snobs. New Jersey has a lot of money too and many preppy people and I say this as a New Yorker.
