I'm a fan of the Goodstone Inn, but have also heard great things about Inn at Perry Cabin. If you just want to chill, you can't go wrong with either of these. Do you have to go on the weekend? If you can go during the week, you'll find greater availability, better rates, and more privacy.

Salamander definitely!!! You can sit outside and stare at the stars while enjoying wine - during the day indulge in winery, shopping in town, visiting their horses, spa, etc.

Gorgeous rooms and very much an adult clientele - won't see many kids running around.

PP here. Was also going to add that I have done this recharge trip several times , including at the mandarin and salamander inn, and have been to greenbrier and homestead numerous times. All are nice. But inn at perry cabin is hands down the best for this kind of trip. Small quaint, lots of open spaces to read and walk. Cute town. Great spa and outside pool area.

I would never do a B&B for this kind of trip. What if the owner is a lovely old woman who wants to chat . I would feel rude and would not want to stay in my room the whole time.

Sedona seems like a good idea but not this time of year

There are some cute B&bs in Charlottesville. Some are near a winery if you feel like taking a tour and do a tasting.

Bartlett Pear Inn in Easton, Md.

B&Bs in Chincoteague that do not allow kids include the Inn at Poplar Corner and the Watson House across the street, great breakfasts. The CedarGables has its own pool and does not allow kids under 14!
Drive to the beach, rent a kayak, get tacos and a beer at Pico Taqueria and read a book in their hammock, or gourmet sandwiches at Sea Star. Walk for miles up the beach at the national seashore. Sunset drinks at The Jackspot.
I also like the Channel Bass Inn but they are kid friendly. Superb scones at breakfast and tea and the owners are really nice.

I'm a huge B&B fan. We typically go to places that we can get to within a 3 hour drive - 4 max. Here is my take on the places we've gone and enjoyed:

L'Auberge Provenciale - Loved their breakfast. Loved the rooms and amenities. Only problem is for 4-5 days I don't think its the best place as I don't recall it being a place you could really walk around much. It's off a main road. Two nights maybe but just not the best location to unwind at.

Easton, MD - one of my all time favorite places to go. The Bartlett Pear Inn is a fantastic B&B and has a great restaurant. Breakfast is included. They have a lovely outside eating area as well where you can read and relax. Plus Easton has tons of cute shops to stroll around and lots of restaurants. Oxford is maybe 20 minutes away and has a lovely small beach that is just part of the town so again - another great place you can get to easily from Easton, on your own and walk around, sit, decompress. St. Micheals is another town close by that you can get to easily, stroll around, eat, walk etc. I'd suggest having lunch or tea at the Inn at Perry Cabin while you are there. You can stroll the grounds, sit there and spend the afternoon there in peace even if you are not staying there if you go there for lunch.

The Homestead - nice but too far and wouldn't recommend it on your own. I have a friend who went to the Omni Bedford and didn't think it compared to the Homestead.

Hillbrook Inn in Charlestown - This could be a good possibility if you get one of their suites - preferably the winter suite. They have a really nice spa as well. Their restaurant is good. You can stroll the grounds and sit out and relax. Harpers Ferry is only 20 minutes away and is just lovely to spend the day strolling and immersing yourself in civil war history. The Casino isn't all that but they have a really good Chinese Restaurant there.

We've been to maybe another 3-4 B&Bs but none stand out based on location . One of our all time favorites is in PA - Willkes Barre actually. It's called Bischwind B&B. Problem is there really isn't that much else to do in the area but the inn keeper Billi is just a doll, the grounds are lovely, there is a great large lake near by that you can take daily strolls too etc.

I like the out of doors and hiking and would probably do a cabin in the Shenandoah - maybe one of the ones with a hot tub. But a good case could be made for a B&B near Chincoteague or St Michaels.

But if you don't want to deal with a drive or go anywhere, the Mandarin Oriental is aces and has a lovely spa. Order room service and a massage and don't leave the room. Gawd, I want to do that now.
