Why can't a grandparent pick out clothes?
The fact that OP is posing this question to an Internet forum rather than asking her own son/daughter about stores is a big red flag to me. My mom knows where I like to shop.

My sense is she wants the kid to like the shirts and to fit in in kindergarten. It's nice and sweet. Parents shouldn't be wound so tight that their kids can't wear a few shirts that they didn't preapprove or pick out themselves.

If you want him to dress to impress the rest of the kindergarten set, get him a couple of graphic Ts, especially if he doesn't own any already.
Minecraft, Pokemon and Star Wars/lego Star Wars are the coolest
Uh, hardly. Try Under Armour.
He is Kindergaten. The kindergartners are all into characters and have zero interest in Under Armour.
That is more for the mid to older elementary kids through middle school.
