That's me you're quoting. Would you send your son out In a long t shirt and just his briefs? No you'd put shorts on. And yes, while it may be frilly, I think a press dress and a long t shirt (think down to top of knees) are about the same thing. If you establish the habit early on, it's set and not a problem. My 6 year old DD is a climber an always has been. This lets her wear dresses and still play like she wants. We started this right after she was potty trained. It's never been a problem.

Me again - also as the other PP said - slides and sandboxes. Bicycle shorts help with that too. Not just climbing.

My DD potty trained a few months after she turned 2, that's just when she was ready.

We also have always had her wear little bike shorts under dresses so she's never known anything different.

I would say that 12 is an inappropriate age for panties to be showing.

That's our rule, too, and it's not modesty-based. We go to the playground and play in the sandbox, slide down the slide, swing on the swings, play in the dirt, etc. Bike shorts help keep sand and dirt out of her genitals, and cover her bum when she's sliding and swinging so her naked butt isn't touching the slide or the swing, both of which are dirty and/or hot. Also, more comfortable for sliding--naked skin on a slide is no fun. Plus, if it's what you wear all the time, then there's never any pushback about it--it's just the way it is.
