I eat things the same way as OP's wife and never once have I cried over it. I get teased all the time. Maybe OP should be a little more sensitive to her but sounds like wife needs to lighten up. Really? Crying because someone commented that you eat your sausage plain? You need to be able to laugh at yourself and come back with a zinger or just move on.

Oh, this sounds EXACTLY like the stuff humans do. OP messed up. He's not evil, just momentarily stupid. Like all of us. He should have supported her instead of chiming in and teasing her. That was hurtful and she felt like an outsider and unfairly so. Big apologies necessary, and never do it again.

Just curious, which of your habits does she tease you about? Does she also do it in front of her family?

One thing she teased me about is talking in my sleep. She recorded it once and showed her sister the video. We all laughed about it.

So your wife thinks it's ok to videotape you in your sleep and show it to her sister, then laugh about it....but cries when you mention that she doesn't put condiments on her food.

In my family that's true, but I'm not sure that's universal.

If you like someone and they don't like the teasing, then you fucking stop. It's not up to you to decide how sensitive they should or shouldn't be. If you feel the need to keep doing it, there's something about the interaction that you value more than you value the person who doesn't like it.

It's like if I'm telling a joke. Maybe I think it's funny. I like a person, so I want to share my funny joke. They let me know they don't think jokes like that are funny. So, I stop. What I don't do is keep telling that person those jokes, explain to the person why they're really funny, and get irritated that the person doesn't have the same sense of humor as I do.

I don't think OP is a troll. I know a couple people who have super weird picky eating habits and they do get teased a lot. It tends to be people who eat like children, like I have one friend who primarily eats chicken fingers, chicken Parmesan and french fries. And another who orders burgers well done with no sauce and LTO on the side (and generally has the same simple kids menu picks at all other times). OP is not wrong that it is atypical. But that doesn't mean he has to harp on it. It should have lost its novelty by now, how long have you known her? I assume she's eaten like this the whole time.

Well I find it weird that your family chooses to eat food that tastes so unpleasant you have to slather condiments on it to make it palatable. See how that works? It would kind of suck if someone started making fun of your family's cooking at every meal because you choose condiments.

My wife has made a similar comment to me before, again we laughed about it. If I had known she was going to be upset about this, I never would've said anything.

Op, I would apologize, taker her on a special date. Tell her you'll take her anywhere. Really give her a listening ear, phones away. On your best behavior. (No complaining about rude diners, parking or whatever). Keep it positive.

I dunno, though. If this is your guys's biggest problem, then the simplest thing seems to be to stop talking about ketchup in front of her.

It's not specifically about condiments. It's about him being a jerk to her and complaining about something that doesn't affect him repeatedly, when she's asked him to stop. And doing it in front of her family.

I grew up in a family like that. It's fucking annoying to always have to have your guard up because you never know what innocent thing someone is going to latch onto and start making fun of you for. And it's not that they chose that particular nonissue to make fun of her for (probably). It's the incessant nature of it, and that they're not listening when she asks for it to stop.
