Where are these magical places? And have you eaten there recently? I think you're remembering your childhood.

They're certainly not in the Northeast. Diner food anywhere north of here is awful and not cheap (until you get to Maine, where the food is great in the summer -- good veggies, berries and cheap lobster). Pizza maybe.

The only place I can think of like you describe is Austin.

Atlanta s an example. I would say I could name 30 genuinely good places you can get a family dinner for under $40.

I thought the OP was about lunch? I posted earlier with lunch in mind, but would have had different suggestions for dinner. I lean more toward sandwiches and counter restaurants for lunch.

Pan Am Restaurant one block from the Vienna Metro in the Pan Am Shopping Center. Been around forever. Very low key and relaxing with dated but homey decor. Perfect for a family. They have lots of options, but are especially known for their gyro platter, pizza, and breakfast items. Lots of food, very reasonably priced, service hit or miss.

The food is great, but the accommodations are the absolute worst. OP asked for places to eat out with 2 small kids.

Taco Bamba is opening a new location in Vienna. On Maple where the strip mall was renovated.
