And those of us arguing for registration, training and licensing also agree that everyone is entitled to the right to bear arms, but that they need to be registered and trained. Registration, licensing and mandatory classes do not prevent you from owning a gun unless you fail the gun course, in which case you are welcome to take it again, just like a driver's license test.
The founders did not have to worry about this because in that day and age, everyone learned to fire arms when they were young and so the idea of an untrained gun owner was unimaginable. Not so today.
I forgot to add that the only reason that the NRA is refusing is that they believe that you cannot have any compromise because of the slippery slope argument. But this childish resistance to even discuss any compromises is endangering a significant number of the public every year because you have so many untrained gun owners who have no idea how to use or store their weapons setting the stage for hundreds of gun accidents annually.

And the Congress authorized a standing Army and Navy thus obviating the need for a well-regulated militia.

Can someone please show me the passage in the 2nd Amendment that defines anecdote as data? It has to be there, because supporters of the 2nd Amendment constantly treat anecdotes as data, but I've looked and looked and can't find it anywhere!

The sad thing is that you got the "bad guys will get them anyway" argument from our actual elected lawmakers. What a sorry state this country is in when our elected lawmakers are saying "why make laws. The bad guys will break 'em anyway." Guess what. Not every would-be criminal has the connections and resources to acquire a gun illegally. If they attempt to, there's at least a chance they will be caught in the process. That's how laws work.
And enough with the "it only punishes the law abiding citizens" argument too. How many times do we need to point out that law abiding citizens would get to keep their gun! Nobody is talking about a gun ban or confiscation.
Yawn. I wish you guys would come up with some new arguments. These are getting so old. Next are you guys going to say "if guns kill, then spoons make us fat?" Because that's another compelling and insightful point that you all seem so proud of.
So drugs are illegal, criminals don't get a hold of drugs.

That is a stupid analogy and you know it. If half of the country were advocating for the right of every american to drive a car, without being accountable for that car, with no questions asked...then I would in fact be pointing out the senseless deaths where toddlers would be killing toddlers with cars on a regular basis.
It's not the same thing. We all agree that we shouldn't leave kids unattended in a car with the ignition running, even if we've attempted to teach tham car safety. But millions of Americans will leave them in a home with an unsecure g
You are aware there is no federal registry of car owners, right? Many states also does not require vehicle registration if the vehicle is only operated on private land. The title itself is most often a bearer document: it's not rendered invalid when transferred. So one private individual could sign the title over to another private individual without ever being required to let the state know of the transfer.
Yet we don't have a call on a federal car owner registry as a way to combat car accidents or vehicular crimes.
