Y'all are barking up the wrong tree. The reason people wanted to (and still want to) immigrate here is because of our Constitutions and our individual freedoms, that allow people to make something of themselves. Progressives are in the process of dismantling those freedoms and our Constitution, and think that immigration will have the same effect. It won't. There will be more takers than givers due to the vast welfare state that exists today, and you will see our country deteriorate, as all other countries deteriorated with the same policies.

My question would be not why is diversity good, but why do some people think it's bad? Do you feel threatened because people look or believe differently from you? If so, why?

America's success was due to the Melting Pot. People came from all over the world and it benefitted us dramatically.

Remember also that 100 years ago, Polish and Italians were not considered part of our "culture". It all seems silly in retrospect.

So absurd that many get to check Hispanic box when are from highly educated families etc. There were no Polish check boxes in 1915. Virtually no ESL-my dad and family really mastered English immersion style. What we do need to do is bring back manufacturing and tech related stuff. Get the call centers out of ie India and in places like DC and Philly and Baltimore.

I still cringe when someone says that. I love going to my best friend's house at Thanksgiving - man is it different and wonderful. The only similarity is that they were loud like black people. We had a good laugh about that b/c her sister and my sister are both married to white guys. Very quiet people. Just fun to enjoy the differences of people. I don't want a melting pot, I want a stew with lots of different flavors!

This is not something to complain about. A pp was saying parent involvement at home is necessary for a child's success. This helps to that end. My kids are at one of the most culturally diverse schools in FCPS and many parents don't speak English well. All their kids, however, do, so the concern about lack of assimilation and not learning the language is a bit misplaced. You're not going to have generations of non English speakers. I know I would have a hard time learning a new language at my age I like the fact that this thread has been civil and thoughtful thus far.

What is happening in manufacturing is due to mechanization more than globalization. Everyone wants to blame China or India or Asia or whatever as the reason for American loss of industry. But nobody talks about the billions of dollars that are benefited by American corporations selling their products(Apple, Google, FB, Microsoft, GE, Insurance companies, Auto Companies, Consumer product companies, Engineering companies) in a 2.5 billion population market. Do you know how many millions of jobs are created due to these 2.5 billion people in the USA? Of course it is inconvenient to talk about facts that doesn't work with our confirmation bias . It is much easier to reconfirm what we believe or told to believe by demagogues than to understand facts.

Having said that, yes there is a segment that is getting affected by mechanization/globalization. But the way to address that is not to blame BUT to find solutions to train them and change the economic policies that will benefit the poor rather than the rich who benefits disproportionately due to mechanization/globalization.

I'm not sure I follow this logic. Are you saying that, for example, the kids from wealthy blacks should stop checking the African American box?

If you are advocating for the government to get out of the racial/ ethnic discrimination business, I'm with you. But if you're targeting a particular group, why?

You know what that is, that is an example of one of the richest county in the nation and its school district flush with so much cash that they dont know what to do with it. So they invent ways to spend their cash whether the market demands those translation or not. Can you show me proof that there was demand for those translation? More likely than not the parents may not even ask for it seriously.

That is just one plausible explanation I could give based on my experience. I am sure some others can give other plausible and reasonable explanation. In a hugely complex nation there are MORE explanation than what meets the eye.

And, it is not just Fairfax County. Many other districts around our country, wealthy or not, are needing to translate documents.

Another example of picking a single case or even few cases to prove sample size is representative of the population. There are thousands of counties and hundreds of thousands of schools. The market will drive this business. If there is a demand and the county has the cash to do it else they are not going to. The bigger picture(or the forest) remains valid, these are the trees. Are there any children of immigrants who do not know English? The answer is a clear No.

With respect to your acquaintance who joined a gang, this problem isn't unique to recent immigrants or Latinos, as I'm sure you know...so I'm not sure what it has to do with immigration.

I don't have a strong opinion on offering affirmative action to people from rich families based on their ethnicity (and being first-generation American born to Indian immigrants, if anything I truly am subject to reverse discrimination by schools though it didn't stop me from being admitted to the best ones), but the rest of the stuff you are talking about makes very little sense.

There are still tons of tech-related jobs in the US, but it's true that some are migrating overseas due to lower costs. Maybe lower-paid immigrants on H1B visas are replacing Americans in US-based offices, but increasingly you are also seeing Indians in India who work remotely (enabled by the internet) and earn even less than H1B holders in the US. Same with call centers. Are you proposing making a law that says US companies can't use the internet or foreign contractors? And while I would love to see more traditional manufacturing back in the US, it isn't going to happen. Newer forms of manufacturing, like 3D printing, are happening here...but they provide many fewer jobs.

I think the reality is that the average American worker was always going to be the material loser from globalization, if you define losing as a contraction in job opportunities. We had way more high-paying jobs than almost anywhere else in the world. That was going to happen with or without NAFTA, and you could argue that NAFTA (and the agreements that followed) made the transition to globalization easier than it would otherwise would have been. US corporations were going to globalize...there is no credible way to dispute that. If labor is a substantial cost, you are going to do what you can to find cheaper labor. At best we can try to impose steep tariffs to make foreign-manufactured goods too expensive for US consumers, but in my own view all that will do is create a black market for cheaper imported goods smuggled into the US. You cannot isolate yourself in a world where you can have a face-to-face (over video) call with someone at almost any time of day and almost anywhere on the planet.
