People are pointing out that (1) hitting girls can get boys, who are often bigger and stronger, in a lot of trouble, and (2) hitting is wrong even if you are hit first. Are these boys really in so much danger from these girls that they need to resort to violence to fend them off, or can they just walk away? If the latter, then that's what they should do.

I am a woman and probably one of the most feminist people on this board. I don't tolerate violence, though, in any form from any one. I don't expect my boys to tolerate it either. If a person is physically violent, then they have earned a physically violent response.

Walking away and talking to a teacher usually doesn't stop anything. Bullying just continues behind the teacher's back. Returning violence with violence typically puts paid to whatever is going on.

I am not going to debate Johnson's case with you, because it wasn't my example. There was a lot of he said/she said in that case that makes it unclear whether she hit him first or not.

Elementary age kids in classes can't just "walk away" from their bullies and abusers. They have to be in class and on the playground and on the bus with those bullies. They have to deal with them every day. Your advice to "just walk away" is advice that can't be implemented.

Would you say that if it was a girl bullied by girls? These are kids still learning social skills. Bullying is a problem be it either gender.

My brother was being bullied by a group of girls who were jealous of his grades. They would rip his books up and punch him, a bid for his attention. One day I cornered the ring leader after school and told her if she did it again she would be sorry. Get the older sisters to get involved, if your ds has them.

I used to beat up the kids who teased me, boy or girl, because I was the only foreigner in my boarding school. I was smaller than everyone else but when you're angry, you're stronger. After a few weeks, everybody stopped doing teasing me.

But this won't work in our modern world.
Tell your children to stop fighting at school, and that they should tell the teacher if someone is targeting them, be it boy or girl. There is such a strong anti-bullying social pressure these days - use it to your advantage. In our MCPS school, there are forms you can fill out to complain about bullying and they are taken seriously.
