A ballet or an opera is not a concert.

No, but when I think of concerts, I think of a symphony. I get that that's not what OP had in mind, but it's mean to assume that those of us with a classical association with the word "concerts" are doing so to show off or something. That's just some people's realities. My kids have been to at least 10 classical concerts, and not a single popular one.

DD - 10 - first was Alicia Keyes (my choice) and later that year One Direction.

We went to Taylor Swift last year and will go to Tori Kelly in April. DD is 12 now.

There were the kiddie shows before that all blur together.

We've taken our kids to two real concerts -- one at Wolf Trap (lawn seats) when they were 7 and 8 and the other at The Birchmere at ages 8 and 9. They enjoyed and did well at both.

Wolftrap is a great place to start this. Lawn seats, for something family friendly. Then work your way up to the Taylor Swift arena concert.

I grew up here, and every summer we went to Wolftrap once or twice. It was usually stuff my mom wanted to see, but it exposed me to great music. Gypsy Kings, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Indigo Girls, that type of thing. I actually still prefer that type of concert to a crazy arena concert with everyone screaming.

I guess my first real concert (without my mother and with my friends) was HFStival in high school.
