You do realize we pay for them when we put them in jail too, right? Probably a lot more than we pay through this program. At least this way, they might not commit a crime against an innocent person.

The D.C. Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a bill that includes a proposal to pay residents a stipend not to commit crimes. It’s based on a program in Richmond, California, that advocates say has contributed to deep reductions in crime there.

Under the bill, city officials would identify up to 200 people a year who are considered at risk of either committing or becoming victims of violent crime. Those people would be directed to participate in behavioral therapy and other programs. If they fulfill those obligations and stay out of trouble, they would be paid.

The white guy profiled by WaPo was convicted for cooking meth (ie - Breaking Bad).

Ever see what meth does to people? It's often distributed by Hells Angels/biker gangs.

But he was not, technically, convicted for any violence he may have committed.

But all of that money goes to law abiding citizens in the form of jobs. You pay police to arrest the criminals, court officials to process their trials, and of course if they are found guilty, there's money to be paid to the prisons (guard salaries, food costs etc.)

If you just pay that money outright to the people likely to commit crimes and deter them from committing the crimes -- won't a lot of people be out of work?

If someone who would have otherwise robbed, raped, or killed you, didn't do so because he was tied up in this program, would you be for it then?
Lives will be saved. You just don't care because you don't think it'll be your own.

Yes, like the meth-cook they profiled in the WaPo. What's wrong with living next to a meth-cook? I mean, what's the worst that could happen to you or your kids living among meth cooks and low level dealers? Sounds great!

I know, right? DeBlasio was clearly responsible for the uptick in crime in DC last year.


Laugh it up. The dead bodies will pile up at an increasing rate in DC; just as they are in Baltimore. And NYC. Policies, like elections, have consequences.

But you go on; make jokes.


Did you read the article? In California, when they implemented the program, the homicide and assault rates decreased dramatically. It may not work as well in DC as it did in CA, but there's no reason to think that the program will result in dead bodies piling up. More generally, there's no reason to think that DC is like Baltimore or will become like Baltimore.


I don't give a damn how they do it in California. Paying criminals not to commit crimes is a stupid idea.

You can pay a mobster protection money (extortion) and they will not beat you up. Same exact thing.

I have a better idea: arrest, prosecute, and incarcerate. At least they will not be victimizing the public while they are locked up.


Are you saying you'd rather shell out thousands possibly hundreds of thousands over time to incarcerate a person in prison? That doesn't make financial sense.
