09:06- U Md v U Miami-- excellent but..it is not the exciting strangeness like a move to tropical Miami

Congratulations! Assuming you are in DC and your student still expects to hear from other schools in March, how does your kid feel about the U? What is a "Full Ride" merit mean anywAy?

Even with 25k, it's still high. DC turned down the Singer Scholarship for a full ride at UMD.

One other question-- why all the talk of privileged rich kids- as if that is a big indicator of terrible. Is this not an issue at any Ivy or is Miami picked on specifically because of offers beauty (the locale and facilities) and brains (more competitive every year).

Son visited on a lark last year, cuz his younger brother was curious. After multiple prestigious universities beginning their talk with..."...we don't offer merit aid", he was stunned to hear the multiple scholarship grants for merit granted exceptional high school kids. Applied to all the big leagues and will hear in March, but as a non-single early action U Miami has already come back to him and offered a presidential scholarship of $25K a year to double major -- it may not be so difficult to turn down a prestigious school when U Miami is pouring money into attracting the best and brightest. Middle 50% ACT at GW 27-31; 28-32 at Miami. Slightly higher but not materially so.

Um I dont think so...the average GPA and test scores far surpass GW. 3 out of 5 in my D's class were either rejected or deferred, 1 got in. Big shock on 2 of them.

Every UM freshman DD met on the day she visited (friends and friends of friends -- so not students chosen by the school for the tour) all had HS GPAs above 4.2. And all seemed to have some real passion (lifetime dancer, nationally ranked tennis player) or something else unique (childhood cancer survivor with spectacular story/essay).

Curious if the difference between getting in or not was because the student visited the campus? We felt that the visit was given great weight for our daughter (that and that we're full pay).

UF and FSU are public schools.
So yes, of course most in state Floridians would probably lean toward their flagship state schools. Just as most kids in Pennsylvania would go to Penn State before Villanova. It's not a testament to the quality of the private or public school, but rather to a reasonably good state school and the price of a private college.
