Family room is good for a tv, you can do your formal stuff in the living room.

Tacky - c'mon people. This ain't the sixties. Are you the same folks who won't wear a smidge of white after Labor Day?

Over the fireplace is fine as long as you angle it down slightly and have a big enough room that the couch is not jammed too close to the fireplace.
In open concept houses with a lot of windows, it is a challenge to find another space for it.
And who wants to have to go to the basement to watch tv. Install a 2nd tv in the basement but not your primary one.

Get the Mantle Mount. We have an oddly shaped basement, this was the best solution. No neck strain, easy to use, absolutely no issues with using the fireplace and the TV at the same time.
