Yoga pants, leggings, Uggs, duck boots, toms, converse with quarter zips are popular. Stores are Aeropostale, Altered States (none in DC, look online) is a great store. Very trendy but modest clothes. Old Navy, Top Shop at Nordstrom, JCrew are also popular.
These are expensive stores, but tweens are very label conscious (even if the label does not show) Zara is much more on point than macys. Macys has a sort of cheap/ slutty look. You might be better off with fewer but higher quality than tons of cheap clothes from macys/ old navy. Dark skinny jeans are a base. Hollister and Abercrombie are going out, but they still have higher quality/ cheaper clothes due to sales. I would put a significant amount aside for a weekend after school starts (but what you want might be sold out)
You cant go wrong with something from Brandy Melville
We get a bunch of stuff from Top Shop at Nordstrom, it is surpisingly affordable. I have to say I disagree with the Macys stuff - we have found some cute things there. No one my DD knows shops at Brandy Melville (you are honestly saying with a straight face middle schoolers shop there?), its Simply Southern Co (I always get the name wrong DD hates the shirts everyone wears), Vineyard Vines are the show off brands.
Brandy Melville is very popular at my DD's school

My child couldn't care less about what she wears other than comfort. That is the only consideration. She is in 6th grade -- not MS.
I'm just wondering if your girls always wanted to look nice or when this occurred.
