I am thankful for this quiet thanksgiving with my husband, child, and pets.

Watching the annual parade of horrors with rude families who bully each other and make dissenters feel unwelcome or small, I'm so freaking thankful we said no to that.

What stupid people forget is that freedom of speech is not Freedom from consequences. If you say something outrageously stupid, racist or offensive be prepared for someone to tell you are wrong. Or weigh theur options on whether they feel like arguing with an idiot and just change the subject.

The right to free speech is very important and a wonderful right. But it only extends to the government, not to your family and friends. The government can't tell you what to say--unless it's proven harmful to others--but non-government individuals can argue as much as they want.

Also, please remember that freedom of speech, even in PP's incorrect usage, extends to both liberals and conservatives, as well as those who straddle the fence. Someone would be in the right to bring up a controversial issue, but others would have an equal right to argue that issue with their side.

But read the room, people. This is a holiday of family togetherness and gratefulness. I'm hoping no one around our table tonight talks politics at all, and we con concentrate on being happy that family from all over the country has come together. However, if my uncle says something that offends me, I do have the right to speak up, then calmly change the subject.
