I work in nonprofit communications, but I don't do PR (and would never want to do PR). What's frustrating about this thread is that you're grouping together, and then rejecting, a set of jobs which are really quite distinct. At y orgn, there's a comm team, a pr person, and a marketing director. None of us have the same skillsets.
I would look at communications roles that don't involve pr, focusing on content development and editorial or (if you can pick up some digital expertise) content strategy. I'd also look at development jobs at a nonprofit or university.
