Another vote for Scotland. Plus, when in Edinburgh, you could visit Fettes College, a boarding school that is the inspiration for Hogwarts. The real "James Bond" attended as well. He was a colleague of Ian Fleming's and probably had no idea his name would become so famous.

This - Nothing like seeing Sleeping Beauty's castle for reals.

Then take them to South of France, and to Versailles (Palace, but it counts.)

Germany and Austria! I went when I was ten or so - am now in my mid-30s and still remember and awe I felt at the grand ballrooms and stories told

Hearst Castle is amazing! The interior of most of the rooms were brought over from real castles in Europe. And it was designed by a female architect. Very rare at the time it was built!

Technically, these are McMansions. Our tour of the Potomac with our little one to see where his ancestors lived, really made history come alive for him. The columns date all the way back to 1972.

Haven't been to your other ideas but Ireland definitely has what you're looking for and is a pretty easy country to travel in (English speaking)
