Are you sure you can't practice law in this country? I've always thought that DC was special in that it allows foreign lawyers to practice their country's law here. So you can't advice on US law, but you can advise on your previous country's law.

You know, I've always worked and whrn I had my first child I barely broke even. However both DH and I have always maxed out our 401ks. We are not even 40 and we have a 7 figure balance in our retirement. This could have NEVER happened had I took the short term view and dropped out of the workforce due to the cost of childcare.
Working is not about the short game and the instant results. It's about building a comfortable future and working yourself into a career that give you flexibility and a nice income.
I think the OP is on the right path. It is a choice that will pay big returns in a few years.

At my company 50k is entry level. Even receptionist positions make 45k. Not sure why you would need to take 30k.
