Ila in Sanskrit means "earth".

I haven't read the whole thread so maybe already mentioned, but there is an Indian name (India Indian) which is transliterated as Ila with the same pronunciation.

My daughter is Isla.

Two thoughts:

1. Its really not that big of a deal. People mispronounce even the most basic of names and so many names have multiple pronunciations anyway. Alicia can be A-LEE-sha or A-LISH-uh. You can name your child James and will have to correct people for calling him Jimmy. People will forget if your daughter is Danielle or Daniella. I've known people for years who all of a sudden spit out a derivation of my name, but not my actual name. Pick what you like, but just be prepared that people are morons.

2. Know that there are lots of little girls with this name. We are in Northern VA and are shocked at how many we've met just at the few playgrounds we go to. We knew it was in the 300's on the list when we named her, but didn't anticipate it would translate into so many right around here.

3. I've never heard of Clan of the Cave Bear.

I personally would think Isla was pronounced "Iss-la" and "Ayla" was pronounced "eye-lah". Based on the posts so far, I assume OP is going for "eye-lah".

Ayla seems obvious to me. Very pretty. There's an Ayla character in House of Cards. She pronounces it eye-la

Either choice is going to require a lifetime of pronunciation and spelling correction for you and your child. If that's what you're going for then either one works.
