There is a sidewalk on that part of the street, but a massive amount of overgrown bamboo is partially in the way so maybe that is why she was in the street. When I was a runner I preferred the street because the asphalt has more give compared to concrete and is better on your joints. Regardless, no one, and I mean no one deserves to be run over and have their ripped up body left in the street. When I ran I ran on that Commonwealth all the time, on the sidewalk or in the bike lane, but even then it was just too scary and I stopped running outside altogether. The speed limit is 25 and no one obeys that. No one obeys the no turn on left signs, and people making right turns only look to their left for oncoming traffic, never also to their right to see if any pedestrians or bikes are coming.

Or *gasp* maybe, just maybe, she was in the street illegally. Still doesn't mean she deserved to be hit by a careless driver. (Yes, anyone who hits someone, doesn't even know they hit someone and takes off is careless). You are an asshole.

I drove through that intersection twice that morning - the second time probably about 5-10 minutes before the accident. And, I have run that exact stretch of road multiple times. The other side of Commonwealth there is even worse, because there is a two-block stretch without any sidewalk. This is heart wrenching.

Based on what I saw, no. It appears she was hit in the street. There are several large trees and telephone polls on the sidewalk grassy part, and none have been touched. Plus the tent covering her body was in the street and you can see where they cleaned it up, all in the street. That part of the street (the southbound part) has one driving lane and then some extra space next to the sidewalk where there are parking spaces outlined in white. It appears she was in the road, all the way to the right next to the sidewalk right before that part of the road turns into parking spaces, so an ad hoc bike or running lane.

I know this area well, it has always made me very nervous when I see joggers in the street there

My heart goes out to that poor victim and her family. She was someone's daughter, maybe a wife and mother herself. Heartbreaking.

I've checked all the news outlets and it appears the story hasn't been updated since yesterday afternoon...

As terrible as this seems to be, the (slight) upside is that hopefully it was quick and she did not suffer. It seems to have been a very violent, horrific hit, and pronounced dead at the scene. I just hope that she did not feel a thing.

Anyone who was in the area between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. this morning and witnessed anything unusual or who has any information related to this incident is asked to call Investigator Barrett 703.746.6873.

How is it an unknown vehicle if they've identified the vehicle and the driver?

Seems like they expanded upon an earlier email update and the editing was a little off.

I have driven that strip a million times. This is just horrific. I am so sad for this woman and her loved ones.
