I posted the above about marshall, I am zoned for mclean but we are lucky enough to be able to utilize the stem academy and know people who are very happy with ib.

Any moron with half a brain knows that ib was put into less desirable school's to attract desirable demographics. It hasn't really worked in that sense. Marshall used to be undesirable back in the 90s and earlier but feeding neighborhoods improved and brought in higher incomes which improved Marshall.

Actually ib has as many as ap, in fact marshall is a stem academy school and has a lot of extra high school college credit courses.

You don't need to do an ib diploma, you can take classes here and there like ap. Ap has no diploma.

OP, in your situation, I would go with an AP, rather than a IB school. You might think that an IB school would do a better job of developing your child's writing skills, but there's also a significant chance that he would be frustrated with the heavy writing requirements and choose not to pursue an IB diploma. The variety of courses available at an AP school provide for considerably more flexibility. Good luck!

There are good schools in all of those neighborhoods--and in others, as well. Don't forget commute issues--after school and social activities factor in with that. If your work commute is excessive, a whole bunch of other problems are created.

I agree Vienna is further out, but they do have plans to upgrade their strip malls as does Fairfax and some other towns. The re-zoning is already approved. How long it takes to develop remains to be seen. I actually like strip malls to denser living. Vienna has a town center along with it's strip malls similar to Herndon. It's nice and easy to walk to from quite a few single family homes. I don't get the hate just because of some strip malls.

There is a little difference from ES. If the ES is bad it can be Huge. The same house in Dogwood ES vs Hunter Woods can be significantly cheaper in Dogwood.

In Vienna, Louise Archer and Vienna ES go for a little more than the house in Cunningham Park or Marshall Road. (Flint Hill and Wolftap do not have the "standard" 1950's ramblers for comparison.

We love Vienna. Particularly for its community feel. Church Street Holiday stroll, Halloween parade, Viva Vienna to name just a few. Also, fabulous restaurants and great schools. I guess CNN and Money magazine ranking Vienna as one of the Best Place to Live in the country doesn't hold any weight? I can just imagine someone snapping pictures of the Vienna strip malls as they drive down Maple Ave to prove a point. Geez. Maple Avenue runs from Tysons, past Vienna, Oakton, Fairfax, on and on. Take the time to walk around the area, talk to actual people, and don't rely on a few posts on DCUM to make such a big decision.
