We have a similar backsplash in our kitchen - squares set on the diagonal. Looks great and is easy to clean.

Backsplashes are tricky. My best advice is buy some of each tile you like (or borrow some from the tile shop if they'll let you), hold them upto the backsplash, and see how it looks. Much like paint color, lighting plays a part.

We did this with our backsplash and went through a bunch before we settled on one. Also, for the best look remove the 4" splash against the wall and tile all the way down to the countertop.

It would be really helpful if you posted a photo of your kitchen with the beige paint and stainless appliances.

My backsplash is similar to what you pictured. Ours basically takes the place of paint as you can see. It's not hard to clean. In fact, it always looks clean.

OP here. I love your kitchen, pp! Question: what color grout did you use, and did it hold up well? I especially love the tile mural above the stove, that is just the perfect "special" touch, you know? My goal is to have a kitchen like yours- basically appealing to anyone (for if/when I sell), but still warm and with little special details here and there.

Hi OP. We can't take credit for the kitchen remodel. The previous owners remodeled the kitchen. The grout is light. I took a close-up picture of the tiles so you can see it better.
