I've lived in this city for 25 years and would have no patience dating a guy who said this to me. If he's truly covert he has a story he readily gives, and if not he can say where he works. But saying he has a high level clearance while claiming that he can't say where he works? No way.

Hmm I don't think it necessarily means he is scamming you, but I agree that people who really do have important top secret jobs are very nonchalant about it and wouldn't draw attention to it in this way. He likely has a boring ordinary job for some government agency. If he is acting like he is trying to impress you than I would be weary of this. I've heard of guys lying about stuff like this.

I agree with this. I worked for a "three letter agency", and now work for a government contractor that counts the intelligence community among its customers. The culture of secrecy is such that we don't even mention the name of the agency in conversations where everyone knows who the customer is. It's probably not hard to find out, and as the relationship progresses I'm sure he'd tell you however until there is a level of trust established, the less information the better, if only because it will bring up questions that he can't answer. Are you really attractive? We used to have a counterintelligence guy come brief us, and one of the things he used to say was if the guy or girl who approaches you is way too good looking for you then be weary. As for dating someone who can't talk about their work for a lot of people this would be a plus. If you really knew how boring most of this stuff was I assure you that you wouldn't want to hear about it anyway.

It means he has a huge ego. This is DC. Everyone works for a government agency.

A friend of mine was scammed by someone like this.

There are other jobs that are code for "unemployed" like

I work for the mafia
I'm a consultant
I own my own business (but doesn't identify it)
I do temp work
I'm an intern
My work is top secret
