It is helpful to understand why the police were there. It is NOT OK to use this kind of force when detaining them. The officer was *pissed* because as he put it he had to run on a hot day with 30 lbs of gear to chase some kids down. Was it right for the kids to jump the fence? No. Could the situation have been handled better? Yes. There were other cops there that recognized pulling your gun out was not the right thing to do. This one guy seemed to be a bit of a hot head and needs training on how to diffuse situations. There was another officer there who was able to better handle the crowd (you can see him at the beginning).

On the side note, the womans comments at the pool were disgusting, even if they jumped the fence. There are better ways to communicate that they shouldn't be jumping the fence. Maybe more people should be sharing her picture with a meme of what she said!

The white woman had words with the party promoter from what I understand-who was the 19 year old. The white woman made some racist comments and the 19 year old got into a physical altercation with her. Though I could be wrong-I assume the white woman lived there and was annoyed that a mob of uninvited, unattended and unruly black kids overtook the pool, and made the statement that they should go party over at their section 8 housing. Not nice, and perhaps she should have shut up and just called the police. The kids should have left immediately, since the majority (if not all) were not legitimately there, and they should not have been confrontational. If you tresspass somewhere, it is stupid to make a scene. Of course now it is a race thing-but this is a simple case of idiot teens acting badly (and one stupid cop on a power trip).

Yes, admittedly the teens holding a party at a private pool was the catalyst for the cop's behavior, but it still doesn't excuse it. His actions were out of proportion with the situation in front of him.

I can't help but feel that the sentiment that is present in the following historical photo still pervades much of the South today.

Also reminds me of an incident that happened while my family was vacationing in a southern U.S. beach town. As we walked the length of the pool area, it seemed like every pool activity stopped (volleyball, etc.) and we were openly stared at. We were the only minorities there.

Why are people assuming the pool crashers didn't have access to a pool? I live in a majority black area and we have pools everywhere.

HOAs could have liability issues. But we need more public spaces and fewer privately owned ones. The air we breathe, the food we eat, the school we benefit from--far too much of this favors the elites (of all political groups). Off topic, but the move to disrupt white spaces such as restaurants serving brunch has been very interesting and provocative.

Pool crashers or not, that is no reason to beat someone around. He snatched that girl up by her hair and assaulted her. I hope they bring criminal charges against that police officer. None of the other police officers behaved that way. He is likely a hot head. Lots of the wrong types are attracted to police work and he's probably one of those types.

Unless you are "brown," please shut up and stop pretending you care about us. My kids don't trespass other people's properties, nor do they act as smart asses when dealing with older neighbors or with the police.

(And, yes, that policeman has been rightly suspended for his overreaction, but the root of the problem was the teenagers' bahavior, not his)

I agree, yelling and arguing with police like that. I would punish my kids for that behavior.

What pool, country club or HOA do you belong to? Please invite 50+ unruly, underprivileged teens to your pool, some may need to jump the fence, but that's ok! Just try it as an experiment-find a tough HS in SE or PG-put up fancy fliers and just let them come-it should be fun! Let us all know how it goes! and do tell how your neighbors react......

African Americans' presence at private pools in "white" areas seems to strike an atavistic nerve in white people, and brings out ugly behavior. See, e.g., the twentieth century. This country hangs by the gossamer threads of economic stratification and private property. This mentality of, I paid for it so it is mine has got to change.

i dont even know why folks bother thinking "video evidence" helps anything because as evident in this thread, some continue to pick and choose what they want to see to "justify" these actions.

there can be video of an officer coming up to a person and just shooting them and some of you will find the smallest detail (did you see his hand twitch, he asked too many questions, his car windows were tinted, he didnt remove his shades, etc etc) in said video to justify the behavior.

some of you choose to just hold on to terrible views you have of minorities and events like these are your opportunity to express them in almost some glee.

The woman who arranged this "party" should also be arrested as she was inviting all these unauthorized kids into the pool when she had no authority to do do-black, white, yellow or green-DO NOT tresspass on private property and then act all belligerent and indignant when you are asked to leave-this has nothing to do with race-just a bunch of assholes acting as such (who happen to have been black this time). The cop seems a little crazy too-WTH was that sumersault action he did when he was running-he needs a break from his job and possibly to be tested for cocaine abuse!

that is what to teach your kids. never ever talk to cops.

see how that cop was nice and friendly to the white kids that gave him is flashlight back but the black kids he instinctively attacked and berated. This type of behavior is not usually tolerated so he must have felt very comfortable acting like this.

Those rule didn't work for Tamir Rice, who was sitting on a swingset with a pellet gun, and was shot within 2 seconds of the police arriving. They didn't work for John Crawford, who was gunned down in a Wal Mart in Ohio while walking around with a toy gun that he picked up off the shelf at that store

Black families have "the talk" with their children all the time. How to behave when the police approach, even if your white peers are acting differently. Because they know what happens to Black boys who get sassy with the cops. But even "the Talk" doesn't always save them, because sometimes they don't even have a chance to deescalate.
